Our legal team continues to move a growing number of cases forward. This year, we have advanced several active investigations, conducted critical witness interviews, coordinated forensic consultations, and retrieved critical case records. We also continue to collaborate with partners across the state, including the Marion County Conviction Integrity Unit and the State Public Defender.
 
Behind every potential innocence case is extensive, painstaking work. Each request for assistance begins with intake—reviewing applications submitted by mail, online, or phone; checking court records; assessing procedural posture; and responding to applicants within a month. Cases showing indicators of wrongful conviction move into deeper review.
 
Once a case advances, the work intensifies, often requiring:
•  Comprehensive record retrieval and analysis
•  Expert review in DNA, arson, pathology, ballistics, and other fields
•  Witness interviews and site visits
 
This careful and time-intensive process is what makes exonerations possible—and donor support fuels every hour of it.
 
We Continue to Accept Requests for Assistance
 The need for innocence work in Indiana continues to grow. Since launching in 2023, INIP has:
•  Received over 180 requests for assistance
•  Built a strengthened intake model in partnership with Indiana University
•  Accepted several serious felony cases for representation.
